Lauren Swanberg, 17, talks on her cell phone after she witnessed a fatal accident on Interstate 90 at Exit 443 west of Billings on Wednesday evening. Tyson Merrifield of Laurel was killed when a trailer broke free from a pickup truck and hit the pickup he was driving.
The driver of a flatbed pickup truck looks over his demolished horse trailer at the scene of a fatal accident west of Billings on Wednesday. The trailer broke free and struck another pickup, killing that vehicle's driver.

I can't tell if the trailer was a gooseneck or bumper pull but my guess is that it was a bumper pull and not very well maintained. I would say he had no or inadequate safety chains and/or they were not connected to the truck frame or frame hitch. It apparently had an inoperative brake safety breakaway switch and likely no breakaway battery that had sufficent charge to engage the unmaintained brakes.
They should make an example of this guy to get other trailer haulers, including individuals, attention about maintaining equipment and proper hitch up.
