CHAIN BINDERS
RATCHET BINDER AND LEVER BINDERS- Chain binders for trucking meet DOT and CVSA specifications. Versatile and adjustable, these load binders offer heavy-duty transport securement.

Ratchet style and Lever style Chain Binders can be used interchangeably and selection of either style only depends on driver preference. Consider the 'weakest link' effect to maximize your tiedown working load limit. Choose a WLL (Working Load Limit) equal-to or greater-than the chain you will use it with. For example, if you have a 3/8" chain rated at 6600# WLL and select a binder rated at 5400 lbs, your chain will be effectively de-rated to 5400# (the weakest component). This may or may-not be important depending on the load you are hauling.

RATCHET CHAIN BINDERS
Ancra Chain Load Binders are all steel, drop-forged, and meet FMCSA and DOT specifications. Versatile and adjustable, these load binders offer heavy-duty transport securement. All are Grade 70 short link transport chain and meet the standards for welded steel chain as specified by the National Association of Chain Manufacturers (NACM).
Clearly Stamped with Working Load Limit.

One of the most common mistakes seen is the way chains are secured to the trailer. The proper way is to put the chain around a pocket inside the rub rail, and then attach the hook to the pocket, not to the rub rail. Nothing should be attached to the rub rail. The rub rail is there to protect the chains if you hit something or something hits you. The securement system can't be protected if it's outside the rub rail.

If you're using a snap binder, take the chain around the pocket, and then put the hook on the chain. At this point, if the chain is too tight or too loose, you can take it up a half of a link at a time, instead of a whole link. You won't need that long cheater bar, which you should never use any way. More drivers have been hurt by binder pipes and cheater bars than anything else.

Having your chains too tight is just as bad as having them too loose. The chain manufacturers tell you that you should never need a pipe or cheater bar, your hand is enough. The dangerous part of being too tight is that even the flex of the trailer could cause the chain to snap. Also hitting an over-tightened chain with a hammer can cause the chain to fail.

Flatbed Securement Guidelines
Revised: 1/14/04
4. Determining the Number of Securement Devices Needed
A. Working Load Limit (393.108)
The method of applying the working load limit, to determine the number of securement devices
needed for the weight of the load, is as follows: The aggregate static workload limit (WLL) of
the tie-down assemblies used to secure an article against movement in any direction must be
equal to at least 1/2 (.5) times the weight of the article. The working load limit can be taken
from the charts below or from tags or labels on tie-down assembly.
Simply stated, the above paragraph can be stated as:
NT = (Weight of load)(.5) WLL
NT = Number of tie-downs needed
Load = Weight of the load to be secured
WLL = Working Load Limit of tie-downs
The working load limits of tie-downs may be determined by using either the tie down manufacturer’s
markings or by using the tables in this section. The working load limits listed in the
tables are to be used when the tie-down devices are not marked by the manufacturer with the
working load limit. Tie-down materials which are marked by the manufacturer with working
load limits that differ from the tables, shall be considered to have a working load limit equal to
the value for which they are marked (393.108 b).
Welded steel chain which is not marked or labeled to enable identification of its grade or
working load limit shall be considered to have a working load limit equal to that for grade 3.
