Diesel fuel’s average national price dropped 3.2 cents to $3.033, the Department of Energy reported Monday.
Gasoline prices dropped 7.6 cents to 2.924, following a 3.8-cent drop last week.
The decline in diesel prices follows a 1-cent gain last week.
Diesel’s average fell in three of the five national regions but rose 3.8 cents to 3.349 in the Rocky Mountain region and 1.9 cents to $3.237 in the West Coast region. In California, which DOE breaks out separately, the nation’s main trucking fuel rose 0.1 cents to $3.221.
Diesel shortages in Wyoming have prompted some filling stations to begin fuel rationing, mirroring supply issues in Colorado that began in early August.
Meanwhile, crude oil futures rose $1.31 to $72.45 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange on news that Iran will risk economic sanctions and continue to enrich uranium in defiance of a United Nations resolution, Bloomberg reported.
Each week, DOE surveys 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
