I've been running H/S & Auto Transport starting 5/2008.
Previously I was primarily transporting Equine, Livestock and Agri items like loads of Hay, etc. After getting angry with the rates dropping on Equine transport with due to political reasons, I had to find something else. Yes, I've shoved random freight in my livestock and horse trailers, so the whole freight idea wasn't really new to me. Plus with my love of cars and toting a large race trailer around the country years ago... it seemed like a perfect fit for me.
Now, since I never do things half-way... I've already expanded to 2 owned trucks and currently 1 lessee (Hey Hoss, Hows the warm weather? )
We run several trailers, mostly vehicle transport pulling with dodge trucks (of course).
Unit 1 - Died in a Flood on its second run in S/IN during the June floods. (off the books and retired)
Unit 2 - 2008 Dodge 3500 6-spd Manual DRW 4x4 QC
Unit 3 - 2008 Dodge 5500 6-spd Aisin Auto 2wd StdCab
Unit 4 - 2005 Chevy 3500 5-spd Auto 4x4 Crew (Hoss's truck)
Unit T1 - 2008 PJ 40ft Lowboy
Unit T2 - 2004 CornPro 24ft Livestock (Yeah, I'll still haul cattle/etc sometimes)
Unit T3 - 2008 Take 3 53ft w/Trailer package 102 wide
Unit T4 - 2009 American Hauler 53ft Enclosed Customized for Auto Transport (my Baby )
My New Entrant Audit was completed last month without a single 'action item' or suggestion. With the help of some guys around this and other forums, alot of phonecalls and research, and some DOT calls... I aced it. Now due to the industry that we've wedged ourselves into, even DOT gets confused. Interestingly enough my DOT officer calls me with questions about how I would respond to certain things. He's a very nice guy and we talk all the time.
Anyway, i'd like to thank all that have helped me in getting my stuff together and pointing me to the right spots to begin my studies in the beginning. And now that I have almost everything committed to memory or have access to within minutes, i'd be happy to help in regulatory questions etc. I may not have the answers like most of the others will, but I could point you in the right direction.
I've made many mistakes and paid for them already during my setup. So I'd like to offer a bit of my knowledge from those mistakes to help others avoid those mistakes.

Thanks for you input. We are glad we could be of help to you. That what this forum is about. I sure wish this and other forums had been around when I started to setup my business back in 2004. There was nobody to dig the info out by talking to them. It was search the regs and try to find DOT folks that could tell you about setting up under 26K for towing trailers. It was a live and learn experience.
We welcome any comments or questions. Tell your friends about the forum also.
