I'm new to this forum thing so bare with me... Can anyone give me some advice on getting into the business. I've towed everything from 48ft enclosed trailers, to boats, and open trailers and I'm thinking about changing careers. I've got a '02 ford dually, and looking a buying a three car wedge. I think I want to start as a contractor with a larger firm to learn the ropes - good idea? Does anyone have a suggestion regarding good companies I can contact? What kind of money can I expect? How much time on the road should I expect? I'm fired up, but I need some answers. Please help the new guy.

My advice to you is to start reading this forum. There is a lot of info here regarding your questions. Others have asked the same questions. So take some time and read everything on here that you can.

Good to see you here. Hope that we can get more people involved. I try to pass the word around as much as possible.
If I remember correctly you haul with your dad. Is that right?
Again glad you are here.

I am new here, but member of dieselplace.com and hotshothauling.com. Because of the falling economy, our little dealership looks to be closing by all indications. I need to get things rolling to start hauling myself. I have read alot and have local people I am in contact with to get everything rolling so that IF we close, I can start running in January.
I work at a very small Chevy dealership in rural Louisiana, but I live alot closer (with-in 2 miles) to I-20 between exit #101 & #103. I have the truck, just working to get trailer and regular customers lined out before I start.
Thanks to everyone here for thier time and post to help one another for all problems.
I hope that it doesn't come down to the dealership closing.
Some are making it OK in the trucking business but it is going to be tough to get started in an economy like we are in now.
If you can get the customer base and have several consistant customers for freight and use cars for fill ins you should do OK.

Just since last night about 8pm, I have one phone call from GM dealer about 50miles northeast of here, they have heard we are closing from a GM source. 2 people at the store this morning here in town asked me what I was going to do when we closed. It seems to be all over town that we will be closing by Jan 1st.
Guess I better get my "stuff" lined out in a hurry just in case.
Looking to haul any kind of trailer from manufactor to dealers if this happens before I get a trailer. I talked to 2 places in Oklahoma about delivering horse trailers, but like RV business, it is slow everywhere.

Who did you talk to in OK about horse trailers?

That was about 2 months ago, but one was Pierce Trucking. I don't know who too call. My brother-in-law lives in Antler/Hugo area, they have told me I can stay at thier house any time if I have a haul out that way. They have alot of land, plenty of room for any kind of trailer I would be hauling.
I am open for a list of brokers or trailer places. Hate to sound like I have no clue, but after 24yrs in GM/Toyota parts, I am learning alot about trucking and who to contact. Just ask me about a GM or Toyota parts though.
Don't know the situation with these folks but I hauled for them until the spring of 07. Good people to work with. You have to have your own authority unless they will let you run under theirs. They are a broker.
I have never heard of Pierce trucking. Where are they located? There is a place called Wheels Unlimited that are a bunch of crooks and have been shutdown by DOT several times and keep popping up under different names.
D & S Transport is in El Reno, OK. Phone is: 405-262-2232. Talk to David or Susan.

T.C. did your broker get you loads near your drops. Seems to me that once you outlined your operation, and you had a lower DH % than most RV haulers. Seems to me to have any chance to make a good profit, you need to keep that number down.
Brian
PS. welcome to you new guys , just post, baby post, thats all you need to do.

Sometimes they did and sometimes they didn't. It is just like any other freight hauling the pickups are not always close.
They did a much better job though than the RV transporters did. One of our customers gave us outgoing loads from where we dropped pretty often.
With the economy being in the shape it is in things like rv's and horse trailers, and boats are not moving as much as they were.

No Sir, I haul for myself, alone. Dad is a retired Army Sgt. and heavy equip. operator.
