Sharp edges and points cutting into tarps.
I always carry pampers or kotex and gray tape.
cover the cutting edges with this protectant and gray tape.
Stops the sharp object from the tarp.

Weird...lol. I would also recommend getting some old old fire hose, conveyor belt (cut in squares) for straps. For chain you could use a good rubber hose cut in 12" or so lengths. Take off one hook, and slide them on, put the hook back on.

In a pinch, use cardboard boxes as long as they don't get wet. Also, carpet squares work good too.

Sort of off subject but since kotex was mentioned. I read where a Marine's life was saved in Iraq because of some tampons he received in a care package intended for a female Marine. It turned into a joke and they were carrying the tampons in their pocket. One Marine was wounded and they couldn't get the bleeding stopped. Someone recommended using the tampon. They got the bleeding stopped and the doctor told him he would have bled to death without using the tampon. I am told the medics now carry tampons.

The inguenuity of the US military always overcomes obstacles. It seems to have always been that way. Leave to Americans to find a way to get it done.
