Mar 3, 06 - 2:20 PM Bookeeping Question
Just would like to know what bookeeping systems are used for the trucking busness? Is there anyone out there using a good easy to understand computer bookeeping system geared to the trucking business that don't cost an arm and a leg?
Looking for something more than a few cash reciepts and notes on a napkin.

Don, I'm just using Quicken - with it you can track several accounts, both personal and business. and it makes my accountant happy which is a very good thing! and I tape all those little bitty receipts to notebook paper so I can find them again.

I am told that the IRS does not like it when you use the same file for tracking business and personal funds. I hope you have the data is separate files in the event of an audit.

Tom, in Quicken you can set up several accounts and run reports for each so that should make everyone happy. We only run one pickup, so we are small potatoes. Teresa

I use EXCEL,but just ordered a software program for keeping records on my laptop. It's from PBS, for $99.00. I think I am going to like it. More user friendly than Excel. Started using it last month.
Bother-in law and his wife are CPA's, they designed a nice program for me in EXCEL. But, I liked the looks and feel of PBS. You can add or delete chart of accounts as you need.

Don,
I've been told by 3 different tax folks that QuickBooks Pro is what they use for this industry. I think, the last time I checked the price on it, it ran around $300 ... I'm having to wait a while to purchase it. Until then, I'm using some spread-sheets I made up on Excel ... it isn't fancy, but it's cheap!

Thanks to all who responded to my question.
Things are harded to do in this business than I first thought. Its like the industry is out to make it as hard as possible to run a hot shot business and do it legal.
If I only had $20,000 more $$$ I could get this going. Sound familiar to any of you?
Iam tring to get my business up and running and just run into brick walls everyway I turn.So many catch22's its driving me nuts.

Been using quick books for last few months (even though I just finaly started driving). Easy program to use. Freind gave me the expensive version ($600). But is great!! Execpt all the red it shows right now. If you take a little time and set it up right, is very very easy to use. Also my accouant preffers it. And yes I understand all the brick walls you are running into!!! Still running into them! Was called about my saftey inspection, before I ever made it past probation (MC/DOT). BTW I would recommend not using Folley Services to help with that. Still waiting on them, and hired them 1 1/2 months ago. Good Luck either way.

Yeah, and then after you get everything all set and ready to roll is when your about broke. Then you get to steal from Peter to pay Paul till you start generating some revenue.
Even then, you always got something coming up that you have to buy, pay a fine or pay for maintence etc. There was a guy on here that said, "If you can make the first couple of years, you can make it."
