Bush Signs Border Fence BillPresident Bush last Thursday signed into law a bill that calls for constructing 700 miles of fencing along the U.S./Mexican border, the Associated Press reported.
The new legislation gives the Department of Homeland Security an 18-month window to crack down on illegal border crossings, stating that DHS must by then prevent all illegal entries by land or water, AP said.
Financing for the project remains an issue, as the bill contained no new funding and the $1.2 billion previously set aside by Congress would not be sufficient to complete the entire 700-mile length of fencing, AP reported.
