Links to information sources for startupThe operating authority is granted by the US Dept of Transportation and also the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). They are two separate numbers. Some states require a state DOT # if you pickup a load and deliver that load within the same state. Not all states require this. Operation in each state is granted by a permit thru the Single State Registration system for your state (assuming they are participants) and each state you want to operate in. Not all states participate in the SSR and those that don't may require you to purchase a permit when transporting thru their state.
