need help with trucking info / getting started

Dec 13, 05 - 2:53 PM need help with trucking info / getting started

I am 31 yrs old and faced with some major life issues and a temporay career change. Recently started thinking about trucking..since i have an 05 Ford F650 i had bought for my business (which now the city has changed the zoning ordinances and forcing me to close my custom metal fabrication shop after 7yrs - dont have enough $ to relocate yet). need to make some decent money- about $1500-3000 a week.

hear too many conflicting stories so far.

Been tyring to learn on these web sites and such... what is required>
what steps i need to take?
what permits?
what truck loads require what?
How big of trailer is too big for my truck.. by law?
Should I upgrade to larger truck and a cdl?
Could I start my own business with a trailer and truck doing auto transport?

confused about intrastate /interstate DOT stuff.

Confused about how a driver gets paid, who pays, and when?

if owner/operator- do i get paid when i pick up the load or drop it?

any special permits for owner/operators?

what are reasonable amounts to charge-considering the owner/operator pays for the truck, fuel, and maintainance, road tax, etc?

who pays fuel if with company- the company.. or the driver?

what taxes are involved?

Can't I use my truck, or get a bigger one, get it DOT inspected or whatever..and go?

what loads have to be weighed at weigh stations- what doesn't?

keep reading about sir-charges? from who, by who, to who? etc.

If i get my own big rig.. what is too many miles for a used truck?

Single or tandem axle?

What do i need to be sure of.. besides condition, before i can use it?

How do i take a cdl state test with out a cdl vehicle?

I understand requiring a CDL.. but all these Authority permits seem crazy unless its for Hazmat stuff... when any retard can throw a couch in their pickup with bald tires and head out without it tied down.

Please organize any helful advice and e-mail me.
Thank you,
JackNorton

WOW I have been looking all over for the same exact answers. My brother and I have been towing for several years now. Just bought a Ford 350 dually, and want to start hauling cars for ourselves now. Most o the same questions we have been looking for answers to. I know posting an answer to all of those questions would take a long time, but would be helpful to many people. Gary if nothing else I belive I will be calling you this week. I hope Im not being too pushy just looking for work.

Due to lack of time, I decided to go with a company to fill out all the forms for me. I must say I belive I got what I paid for. Cost me a total of $934 and that was for MC#, DOT#, and all the fees that goes with it (processing agent, etc. etc.), them just taking my info once and doing it all for me. Had DOT# next day and now I just need to sit and wait another 3-5 weeks lol. Also went the route of hiring another company, to do all the stuff needed for saftey compliance. So for $1,084 I have all my paperwork in order, minus insurance (waiting on bids still). All within a day!

The reason i choose to go with paying someone was...... I kept filling out the paperwork WRONG, and the $300 fee is non-refundable. So basicaly If I would have done it wrong once, I would have spent the same. And then to find out, due to carrying less than 26,000 lbs, I do not have to worry about paying for randoms, saftey classes, and all sorts of things that I was expecting, and planning on doing. So I belive I actualy saved $$ and I know I saved time.

I talked to EVA Clair she was a world of help and very familiar with Hot Shots, rules and regs. And lead me in the right way of Insurance and such. Also when filling out teh forms, she checked on names that are allready in use, (so you dont use the same name as everyone else). And actualy if I was trying to be cheap, she told me alot before I ever even paid her a penny. But I felt more sure of having her do it for the few $$ it costs, plus she will file for temporary permits and such as/if needed for states. For instance I did not know about NY, and all that you need to drive there (permit, and all that comes with it). just made me not wanna haul around there so much, atleast until I get a better handel on all of this But as of now, thanks to Eva, B&B Carriers is now just waiting a few more weeks, before operation. Should have trailer this week, early next week at latest.

NE, that just for the MC # and SSR. PermitsPlus did my SSR and it would up costinge my like 359.00 for me to haul all 48 states. Check with you person that sets it up for you, KY and a couple of others have seperate tags you have to get but there weight contingent. NY is but set at 18k.

My insurance is through american truckers online http://www.americantruckersonline.com

They were very reasonable, friendly and helpful, I think there are probably a dozen of us around the forum that use them.
