I am hoping that Brian or somebody can tell me what is required to run NYC. I DONT WANT TO GO, But the cars are paying well, and my route has dryed up. I have been to Newark, NJ and I didnt like it one bit!!!!! That was in my Peterbilt with a 48' step. If there is money in it, then I may have to start looking at that avenue. How bad are the roads? I know only from TV that NYC is VERY VERY BUSY!!! Any info would help.
Tom Cobb
I didn't like NY or NJ either the few times I went there but some drivers I know didn't seem to mind it much.
Brian is the one to fill you in. He goes there often.
LBZ
I was asking Brian about toll roads on another post and he was saying about $100 give or take from Chicago area to NYC. For me that would probably be the route I would have to go so....a load needs to be enough to cover the extra $$$ you have to hand out.

Well, NYC is a different place for sure.
Long Island Central and Eastern Long Island is not that bad. Surprising, but the roads are wider and traffic is not that bad once on LI. You need to cross the GW bridge toll going east only, then you need to take either the Whitestone Bridge or the Throgs Neck Bridge (less traffic) to the LI Expressway. The bridges onto LI have tolls both way. You can get to them from the north via I95 CT or Tappan Zee bridge (87/287) or from I684 these approaches are less congested than the GW.
The GW is bad in the morning 6-9 am and say 330 to 630 pm, many places don't open till 8-9 am so if you cross early make sure they have parking.
On LI in Hicksville (middle of the Is is an Econo lodge that has truck parking, $90 rate withAAA+ taxes, Cheap for NY).
I495 (LI EXPWY) is a good E-W route for the center to North side of the IS. If you need to move along the South edge then NY-30 ( Sunrise Hwy) is a good route.
Western LI Queens and Brooklyn can be tight in spots not as bad as Manhattan. Neighborhoods can get a little ruff. Very old commercial mostly.
Mahattan, I had my small 31' trailer there and saw a guy with a 3 car (48' I think while I was loading. Several bridges or Tunnels onto Manhattan from LI, or the Lincoln tunnel from NJ. The Tunnels have a height issue I think 12'????? Or you can come down Broadway just after getting off the GW bridge.
Crime not as bad as you might think. I won't load/Unload in Harlam or the Bronx (have driven through them alittle), but have had no trouble in Brooklyn, Queens,Manhattan, Yonkers, White Plains, or Cen/East LI.
I like NYer's I must say, they have been easy to ask for help, and some are very knowledgeable about how to get back to the Expwy's. Some though that don't drive, are clueless about the streets, Subway people.
Polite works real good when wanting to get them to co-operate with you. Be cool in traffic, and don't let the cut-offs or honking get to you. The City really only covers a few miles, might take 2 hours to move 5-10 miles, but then you will get out of the traffic. Not like Chicagoland that takes 100 miles to cross.
Stay off the Parkways, cars only!!!!! Study your maps well before you go and try and stay om Hwy's or main roads. EZpass or Ipass works and it helps , some of the bridges can be $20 bucks cash, seems to me the electronic tolls gives a little discount and much faster.
When travling East/North on I95 Toll boths at the GW and just before CT, with I/EZ-pass stay left for EZpass only lanes, but then use the Right most EZ-pass lane if possible, easier to merge back after the Tolls. Most other Bridges/Tunnles the EZpass lanes are to the Right or center (few).
If you get lost call, i will send you my number.
Many times I find cars in NJ and CT, good areas for cars, push them on the price if you go onto LI or Manhantan, You can loose a whole day in traffic.
Many streets can have the same basic name, 20th STREET (E-W), or 20th AVENUE (N-S).
Truck traffic on the GW goes on the upper level and Stanton Island.
Stay COOL it helps.

Thanks Brian, thats a lot of info, Ill be calling you. I would like to know if there are any permits required also. How is the parking on the streets when the posting reads UNLOAD IS ON A 1 WAY STREET IN DT MANHATTAN????? Are alot of the recievers yards that you pull into, or do you stay on the street and they bring out a fork lift. I did that in Philly one day for 2 cars, NOT COOL. As far as ignoring the horns, I couldnt that day, it really got to me. I typically stay pretty cool behind the wheel, but we all have those days.
What the hell do you do when you get on a road that has a flippin 12' tunnel. I think that I would have quite a mess to clean up on myself before getting out of the truck.
bth9461
I don't remember the the exact height of the tunnels but they are not 13' 6", I think they are something between 13-12'. NY must have them listed on the web somewhere.
Permits NY-HUT for trucks/trailer over 18k, The over size load permit services can get you setup. Credit card and a fax and you can get it pretty fast. Must file quartly mileage on NY rd's, and pay a small fee for non toll rd miles. They used to give you a yellow stick to go on the truck, but now all you get is a paper permit. Something changed with the Federal laws I think that stops the states from making you have a sticker. So now it is much harder for NY DOT to see if you have the HUT. If they stop you and you don't have it, I am sure it costs you big time. They might be ending this permit but it is still on the books.
Many of the side streets on Manhattan are 1 way. If you have 2 or 3 lanes open, no big deal, just park on the street and load/unload, double parking is a way of life in NY. Just be careful to watch the traffic while working the trailer. If you only have 1 lane, then that sucks, because traffic will pile up behind you. Get as much info on the loading/unloading from the customer, don't take a brokers word on anything. Most everything is done from the street.
LI is much better, more room. Western LI can be tricky too, though. The closer you are to NY,NY the less space you have. So always ask questions, and call the customer and verify what the broker told you.

Brian,
I am pretty sure you can say that you have NYC tied up. Unless something is paying insanely well I am NOT even going to put that place on the radar!
Thanks much for the info
Tom Cobb
I can't blame you for that. FL has some attitudes that are just not southern hospitality. I guess that is because it is full of yankees from the northeast, especially NY.
NY and NJ and most of the northeast are on my least favorite places to go.
bth9461
NY'ers have treated me very well, what I have found as I have traveled the country is that people are people. What I see is how much WE are a like. The Enviroment is different but people are people. Yes the South has a more Polite Enviroment.

That is a tough load to haul. I am sorry to hear that your wife has cancer.
Do you have children? This has to be a real strain on the family. I will pray for you that the Lord will heal your wife and that HE will extend grace and peace to you and the family.
May God bless you and your family.

Wow, I missed a couple of posts on here. I guess don't get the e-mails to some of these things.
Fountaine I am sorry to hear about your wifes cancer, just keep putting up the good fight & keep those spirits up. I worked at a hospital over the winter and witnessed some miraculous things that I thought just weren't possible.

What is the word on the NY HUT thing? I have seen a couple things going to NY state(not Long Island area) but didn't have the HUT paper work & didn't want to get it if it was something on the way out?
bth9461
One of those COMMY STATE things, you have to pay a tax to run the roads that are not toll roads. It is hard for the to catch you these days though. They can't issue sticker for the trucks any more. I am sure it is a big fine if they catch you. You must file a qtr report 5-25 bucks not much for even me, if you go only once and awhile maybe less than $5.
You can run I90 across the state and not have it, as long as you stay on the toll road around Albany, just follow the MASS PIKE signs.
Brian
LBZ
Thanks Brian, I think I will sign up later this week for the HUT. I looked at the thru toll way and it was around $90 to pass through NY one way. Irritated me to the point of passing on the load.
LBZ
Brian, Can you go direct through the NY DOT to get the HUT thing or do you need to use the permit services? Never used permit services before, but remember some of the crooks who would like to assist you in setting up originally and have kinda categorized them there as well.
bth9461
Seems to me if you talk to NY officials, they give you 3 permit companies to call. They will not give it direct to you as I remember. Got to pay the middle man you know. It was not very expensive as I remember.
THANK YOU!!!! Much appreciate all the advice on NYC!!!! It all worked!
Just a heads up to anyone else going....take plenty of cash! $40 to cross the G.W. & $27 X2 crossing Triborough....on top of all the other toll roads in the area!!!
