I have recently found out from companies calling me, that I need to be a part of a drug test program, have an employee file, and equipment files. Are these companies trying to sell me stuff that I dont need? I got my boc3 in the mail last week, do I need to keep that in my truck? I will get the answers, I really just want to check and see what you guys know. There is alot that I still need to get together but Im still pluggin. Its no wonder that I read about all these guys running illegaly, there is alot that has to be done. Its not worth the risk to me, I will make sure that I am completely legal.

Yes Phil you have to be enrolled in a random drug testing program. Check a place that does DOT physicals. They should be able to steer you to one. I pay 50 dollars per year per man and 45 dollars each random test.

Phil, I carry my boc3, ssr etc, the ssr is out dated but the new one hasn't been inacted as of yet. I talked to Tenn dot and they haven't heard anything yet which FMCSA should have posted when available.
I carry everything in a three ring binder in clear inserts so I can present them when asked, ssr, boc3, cab cards, inspection form, physical w/ drug screen etc. Per FMCSA aduitor, you need to join a consortium that does random drug screens. I have one done every year when I get my physical but you don't have too.
The worst states that will ask you for your stuff is Tenn & Tx, I get hammered by them all the time when I go through there. I told the tenn dot at the ten ky line on 65, from now on I'm just going to park my rig and bring my stuff in just to save them the trouble of having to call me in.

If you are over 26K you have to do the drug screening. If under 26K you don't have to do it.
Carry a copy of all you fed and state papers and insurance. It never hurts to have a copy of any documents relating to your business.
You also have to have equipment files that contain maint. records. The preventive maint file has to separate from the repair record. On both it has to contain the vin number, make and model and tire size. You also have to have a driver file that has a job application and inquiry to previous employers.
