Ins.Mine is Sagamore Insurance out of Indianapolis. Good Company to work with. Any time I need changes or certificates added they get it done while I'm on the phone with them, and I haven't had any problems at all. Insurance costs me 5300 per year with 1,000,000.00 liability and 100,000.00 cargo, but I have 2 tickets (one a fifteen over on the toll road in IN ) Good company.

InsuranceOur policy is with National Indemnity Company through our local Agent. We pay $7300/year for our 1 ton and flatbed ($1,000,000/$100,000). We have a perfect driving record, etc. Took it because it's the ONLY place that would get back to us. After we got our Authority, we received the onslaught of letters from insurance providers. . .we filled out the forms completely. . .not a single one would get back to us (after they said they would and several followup calls each). Held us up from getting going for several weeks. Guess it's just not worth their time to deal with someone with a single truck and trailer .
Guess we should check around again - we'll use the recommendations you get!

Many of us have had a common experience with Progressive Insur.
They will not cover a hotshot rig nationwide. If you pull a trailer with a hitch in the bed you are considered by them to be an OTR driver. They won't cover you for a distance greater than 300 miles from your home base with a gooseneck / 5th wheel trailer. If you use a bumper hitch trailer they will cover you nationwide.
They would not insure me when I wanted to haul hotshot loads but would cover me pulling bumper pull horse trailers or rv's.
I ran into this same problem with a couple of other insurance companies also. Don't remember which ones.
You need to be darn sure they know what you are hauling and hauling it with before signing up with Progressive. The insurance companies don't always understand that you are using a pickup truck. Their idea of hotshots are short haul with a pickup or van.

Tom,
I just "reupped" with Progressive. I haven't had a problem with them after a year. In fact my policy covers my truck for personal use also. They were at $4700 for a 1M liability. What p****d me off was Lloyds doubled my freight insurance from $1400 to almost $2900 a year because I now need an auto transport clause on my policy that I didn't need last year !?! I figured 100K freight was for anything that I put on the trailer...not so I guess.

WE HAVE THREE TRUCKS AND TWO CARS INSURED WITH THEM AND SO FAR THANK THE LORD THEY HAVE WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO ACCOMIDATE US WITH OUR INS.NEEDS .THEY MAY NOT BE WHAT YOU NEED FOR YOUR COMPANY BUT THEY ARE FINE FOR OURS .SEE SIR EVERY HORSE JUST MAY HAVE A DIFFERANT COLOR??? If they meet your need that is great. They would not go over the 300 mile limit. Maybe it is just TX. I also know of several drivers outside TX that got the same response from Progressive as I got.
I would like to use them for the rate. It did turn out that I got insurance from another source that beat their rate.
If you got it great but not everyone seems to be able to get the coverage from Progressive for the business we are in.

Jerry,
May I ask how you got Progressive to go beyond the three hundred mile radius?
The only reason I am asking is I am shopping for insurance currently and have not called Progressive based upon what I have read about the limitation. I had thought you were pulling a g/n trailer, maybe that is where I am thinking wrong.
So far I have two approximate quotes for the typical set up of a one ton dually and 43' g/n....
One from a broker working through my agent @ Country Insurance for about $8500 annually with an 800 mile limitation. The other is a verbal ball park quote through an agent for Northland Ins. for about the same amount of $$$. The difference is the one through Northland is 48 state approved with one big catch, you CANNOT use your truck for personal use at all! I understand that they stand to lose much for a minor incident with a huge blanket coverage as such and todays lawyers, but sheesh! Regardless, I will know the full details of Northlands deal Monday evening.
Any info on Insurance in Illinois from anyone would be appreciated as I think insurance & the unworldly privilege of having Illinois license plates will be the death of this business attempt. Although, better to find out now than later.
Thanks, Brad

Melvin,
Thanks much for the phone number to Progrssive. While I did find that the 300 mile limit was as others have stated, the girl I spoke with @ Progressive did a search for Central Illinois commercial truck insurers and now have two more leads in which to call. So that is great news and again, Thank you Melvin!
The insurance companies names I was given are both from Springfield.... Diamond Bros. insurance 217 793 6655
R.W. Troxell Insurance 217 528 7533
Maybe one of these will work for others in the area....

I guess it maybe because I've had 35 years "big truck" experience!?! I don't know. I do know that several people here in Vegas went to the same agent that I do business with and were also denied as good as coverage that I got. They got unlimited milage coverage but not the "combined" personal/commercial coverage.
Again, remember each policy is geared to each individual and/or company. Also, if you didn't know this, your credit rating has alot to do with how the insurance companies view you as a "risk".

Your right Jerry, experiance does play a big part. I'm hearing back from several new hotshot owner operators wanting to wiork with us that there having a tuff time finding insurance.

WOWI thought that I had my insurance set up already, but no. Ill bet ive submitted 25 online insurance quotes and got the first one back today from
two weeks ago. $3000 down and $1000 a month. Every person I call tells me to call another person. Two people that I talked to yesterday say they can help me, we'll see. I have probably talked to 30 agents that have given me thirty phone numbers, I dont understand why its so difficult. They say its because I have a one-ton truck and I am trying to get tractor-trailer insurance. By the way, the quote that I got was from Bill at Classic Truck Insurance, he said it took two weeks because the company is in Denver. Nice guy, just a bit steep for me. If I dont get another quote I will have to go through him.

Wow thats high! $15,000 a year. Phil give me a call and I'll check with my agent and see if she knows anyone in AZ. $15,000.00 a year thats just CRAZY! I know a semi owner operator with a dui, speeding tickets and acouple of fender benders that pays way less than that. You got my number call me, I'll help you find someone else.

Phil,
Was there any "kissing or KY" mentioned in the deal? Just kidding. All I can say is OUCH!
Ask the agent if thats $3K down and $1K a month for how many months. If its 8 months or so, thats not too bad.

I would not deal with progressive insurance for commercial usel You will be limited to where you can go, how far and in the end may not have covverage.
Those that use progressive are walking a tight line if something goes wrong. Thare only allowed to make two or three tripps out of their area each year with no penialty. Yet we all know drivers that are exceeding that limits and not reporting it to the carrier, One day it's going to bite someone big time.
If your in Tx see TARA at Jones truck Insurance in WACO, TX. They write for hotshots etc. Tell her I sent you.

Progressive changed their rules late last year. You can now get nationwide coverage. Check them to see if the meet your needs.

Tom C, we have talked about this issue before, but I think Progressive still has the 500 mile radius limit on coverage when pulling a Fifth Wheel Trailer, or pulling a Gooseneck Style Trailer. They have unlimited mileage coverage when pulling a Bumper Pull style Trailer. Of course the 500 miles, is as the Crow flys.
So Tom C, are you saying that Progressive now has unlimited mileage???
|
Tom Cobb

Wrong. I said they changed their policies. I talked to them back in the fall when I was checking into hauling the trailers from the auctions.
Call them. They really did change.

I've been with Progressive/Loyds of London for 2 years now with no problems. The only thing I've changed is my Agent. I use Yoder Insurance in Henderson NV. Very Knowledgable on ALL types of commercial truck insurance.
Dales number is 702 672 2378 good people to deal with.
